A good friend of ours, Gary Betts of Chicago, always joked about politics in his home city. He said that the politicians always encouraged their constituents to “vote early and vote often”. After this recent national election brouhaha down in Florida, I have decided we need to revise the saying to “vote early, vote often, and vote accurately”. Or at least, know whom and what you are voting for! CSI’s national election for FY2002 is right around the corner and your selections will be due back to the Institute on March 1. The ballots will be in the mail shortly. I encourage you to vote and take this opportunity as one of your benefits of membership in CSI. We have big decisions to make this year. First, you will be making your selections for a new North Central Region Institute Director, and the new national officers for President – Elect, 3 Vice Presidents and new Secretary. In addition, we will be also voting for three proposed bylaws amendments. Two of these proposals concern changing the current size and nomination procedures for the national board, while the third proposal requires that all Board members have a minimum of a CDT. The fourth amendment addresses our student member’s use of CSI initials following after their name. These are some important decisions that need your consideration. I’m not about to tell you who or what to vote for … in spite of my own prejudices or likes. However, I ask that each and every one of your please read all the information included with the ballots. Please make your choice for each office based on the candidate’s experience, history and contributions to the Institute. These will be our new leaders, so their experience and knowledge will be essential to the success of the new national Board. Read the information carefully and select the best choices to represent CSI to the construction industry. This is not a popularity contest; it’s your opportunity to choose the best person for the job. In regard to the proposed amendments, they are fully explained in the January issue of the NewsDigest. Again, please take time to read this information. These amendments impact your Institute Board and our student members … and the fate of each of these proposals is in your hands. Please don’t assume that your vote is not important. In the last several national CSI elections, some candidates have won by very small margins. When national candidates loose their race by only a handful of votes, you can understand why your vote is crucial. The same holds true for amendments to our Institute Bylaws. If only a small number of members vote, only those members voting will be deciding if the bylaws will be changed. Now, for more news … for the first time in history, CSI members now have TWO methods to vote in the national election … by mail-back ballot, or electronically – online! Keep in mind, only recently I discovered the wonders of email and the internet. Save time and money by trying your hand at voting online. Keep your eyes open for the paper ballots that will be mailed to all CSI members. They will include the officer and director candidate biographies and the proposed Institute Bylaws amendments. You can either return the paper ballot with your choices, or visit CSI's website home page to access the same information online. It’s an easy, convenient, and you won’t have to worry about a ballot being improperly punched. So, be in control of your CSI membership. Pick up your pen, or click your mouse! Vote and make a difference…. John “Grif” Griffith, CSI |
