From the President, March 2003
Construction Processes

Thanks to an enthusiastic slate of nominees and the completion of ballot counting by the Nominating Committee, president-elect Harold Kiewel announced the new Board officers for the 2003 through 2004 program year. Congratulations to our incoming officers; Dean McCarty, President-Elect; Joseph Sporrer, Vice President – Design Professional; James Bringle; Vice President – Industry Professional; and Joel Meyer, Treasurer. Although each of these candidates is familiar with the Board and its procedures, please continue to show them your support as they and Harold Kiewel, incoming President, spend the next few months preparing to assume their new roles.

The February Chapter program sparked informative discussions of the expectations and demands that engineers and architects have of each other and the follow-up discussions of ways to improve communication. The Chapter showed its appreciation for the panel of engineers representing several disciplines. Hopefully, we can encourage more engineers to join our Chapter and allow this discussion to continue on an ongoing basis. Special thanks to Rebecca Foss, our moderator for the panel discussion.

The March Chapter program promises to continue the insights into the concerns of the other team-mates of a project team. Wendel Chamberlin has taken on the role as moderator for a panel discussion on Product Substitutions and promises to address the viewpoints of the entire project team. See details for this presentation in this newsletter.

The CSI Show will be held in Chicago in early April. With several of our members scheduled to receive prestigious awards from the Institute this year, our Chapter should be well represented at the convention. Our president-elect, Harold Kiewel, will host the hospitality suite this year. Make your reservations now to attend The CSI Show. Updated information on Chapter attendance can be found on our website.

Immediately following our national convention, our April program will be held on the University of Minnesota campus addressing the topic of Construction Law. The construction industry includes a host of design and consulting professionals, constructors, suppliers, and manufacturers all thrown into to action by an owner with a need and the financial resources to get the process in motion. The process is controlled by written and graphic documents prepared by design professionals intended to provide the information necessary to attain the desired results within an identified cost and time frame. Whether indicated in the documents or not, each party to a construction contract may have expectations of the other party which may or may not be their responsibility or even attainable. When disagreements arise, we rely on the contract documents to determine the correct course of action. Eventually, an unresolved disagreement is presented for a more formal legal review… Of course, attending the Construction Law program will help prevent your own personal tour of the various forms of dispute resolution. (For reference to the roles, responsibilities, and expectations for each party to a typical construction contract, see the Manual of Practice, Construction Contract Administration Module, Chapter CA/010.)
